Grassroots to Greatness is a girl-child focused initiative dedicated to empowering young girls through sports, leadership development, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.

Our goal is to create opportunities for girls to build confidence, discover their potential, and develop the skills needed to become future leaders in their communities and beyond.

Beginning with the Arewa girl-child, we create platforms and opportunities that build confidence, develop life skills, encourage participation in sports, and nurture future leaders who are equipped to thrive while staying true to their cultural heritage and values.

THE FIRST EDITION: A SUCCESSFUL BEGINNING

The inaugural edition of Grassroots to Greatness — the Arewa Girl-Child Edition — marked a meaningful beginning in our commitment to creating opportunities for girls through sports, leadership, enterprise and community.

Held in Abuja, the event brought together nine teams from across Northern Nigeria for a U17 3×3 basketball competition, alongside a trade fair designed to showcase businesses and encourage entrepreneurship.

Beyond the court, the event brought together an inspiring mix of business leaders, former and serving government officials, community leaders, schools, partners, influencers and members of the public. Bikers also joined the celebration, showcasing their skills and adding an exciting attraction to the event.

A special highlight was the Back to Ball women’s team, who took to the court for a 10-minute halftime exhibition game. The team brought together Arewa women from different walks of life, including mothers, working women and women across generations, with some players as old as 60. Their participation was a powerful reminder that sport has no age limit and that women deserve opportunities to reconnect with themselves, their communities and the game.

The event also created room for participation beyond the main competition, with fun challenges involving special guests and spectators, adding to the atmosphere and bringing the wider audience into the experience.

The success of the event was made possible through the support of our partners, sponsors, volunteers and a dedicated team who contributed to bringing the vision to life. FirstBank, our official banking partner, played an important role in strengthening the enterprise side of the event, creating opportunities and added value not only for Grassroots to Greatness, but also for participating businesses, vendors and partners.

The event went beyond cash prizes. Teams received additional rewards from partners, including gym memberships and spa treatments. Every participating girl received a basketball, branded bag, water bottle, towel and a stipend from Grassroots to Greatness. Coaches and officials were also recognized with financial support for their contribution to the competition. Team Gombe received a special cash prize for being the first team to arrive at the venue, celebrating punctuality and commitment.

Individual achievements were celebrated as well. KULU Abuja awarded one of the participating girls a full fashion scholarship, while the tournament's Most Valuable Player received a brand-new pair of basketball shoes, gifted by Coach JJ of JJ Basic Basketball Academy.

The initiative also received endorsements and expressions of support from ministers, public figures and respected individuals, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of creating meaningful platforms for the Northern girl child.

Influencers and media personalities helped amplify the event, while television stations and other media platforms captured and shared the story with a wider audience. The event was warmly received by the general public, generating encouraging conversations and interest beyond the day itself.

The response continued after the event, with BBC featuring an interview about the initiative, further highlighting the importance of creating platforms that empower and celebrate the Northern girl child.

From the competition to the trade fair, the women’s exhibition game, the guest and spectator activities, the entertainment, the conversations and the connections made throughout the day, the first edition exceeded our expectations and reinforced our belief that when girls are given the right platforms, support and opportunities, they can rise from the grassroots to greatness.
